چکیده

This paper reports our experiences with agent-based architectures for Intelligent Traffic Management. We describe and compare TRYS and TRYSA2, two multiagent systems that perform decision support for real time traffic management in the urban motorway network around Barcelona. Both systems draw upon similar traffic management knowledge, but the former is based on a centralised architecture, while in the latter co-ordination emerges upon the lateral interaction of autonomous traffic management agents. We conclude that the centralised approach applied by TRYS promotes efficiency for real time operation, whereas the decentralised approach used in TRYSA2 promotes scalability.

A Case of Multiagent Decision Support: Using Autonomous Agents for Urban Traffic Control

This paper presents the experimental TRYSA2 distributed decision support system, that has been designed for the management of the urban motorway network around Barcelona. It shows how different technologies in the area of intelligent agents can be combined to solve this real-world decision support problem: on the one hand, a preestablished distribution of the loci of decision-making and the nat...

A Knowledge-Level Model of Co-ordination

Co-ordination is one of the central research issues in Distributed Artificial Intelligence. Most of the efforts in designing co-ordination mechanisms set out from an agent-centred point of view: they see the individual actor with its local beliefs and reasoning capabilities as the foundation of all system properties. Our thesis is that co-ordination is best modelled from an environment-centred,...

Social Structure in Artificial Agent Societies: Implications for Autonomous Problem-Solving Agents

In Distributed Problem-solving systems a group of purposefully designed computational agents interact and co-ordinate their activities so as to jointly achieve a global task. Social co-ordination is a decentralised mechanism, that sets out from autonomous, non-benevolent agents that interact primarily to improve the degree of attainment of their local goals. One way of ensuring the effectivenes...
